A Doctor When We Need One: Access to Healthcare in Wisconsin for Immigrant Children and Families. Check out this latest WisKids Count brief. Access to health care is fundamental to the healthy development of all children.  But for children in immigrant families in Wisconsin, seeing the family doctor is not always easy. (Fall 2011).

Well-Being of Rural Children and Families in Wisconsin. Rural Wisconsin is a beautiful place to live, work and raise a family. Proximity to the state’s natural resources presents wonderful opportunities for adventure and exploration. Yet, rural children and families face many of the same challenges as their rural neighbors but are disproportionately more likely to be without the public services to assist them when necessary (Winter 2010-11).

For all students to be successful, we must recognize that the needs of ELL students are statewide and not just in a few urban school districts in the state. Close to half of Wisconsin’s ELLs attend school in a district that receives no state funds for bilingual/bicultural education (Winter 2010-11).

Healthy Kids, Healthy Communities. Access to Health Care for Children and Families in Rural Wisconsin Healthy, happy, confident kids: a goal shared by parents and health providers alike. A big part of achieving that goal is the ability of parents to access their family doctor, dentist or mental health provider when they are needed (Winter 2010-11).

Building On Our Strength: Achieving Equity in Health Outcomes for Children and Families in Wisconsin . This brief examines the state’s race-based disparities in a number of key health indicators, and recommends several strategies for addressing these gaps (Winter 2010).

2008

Let's Start at the Very Beginning: A Very Good Place to Start. Our new report outlines the importance of quality early childhood experiences in closing the achievement gap (Fall 2008).

Wisconsin Children in Immigrant Families. New neighbors find success, face challenges. WCCF report highlights well-being of Wisconsin children in immigrant families (June 2008).

2007
2007-2008 WisKids Count Data Book, Safer, Happier, Healthier includes statewide and county-by-county data on statistics related to child abuse and neglect in Wisconsin as well as an essay highlighting the long-term impact and social costs of child maltreatment.

2005-2006 WisKids Count Data Book, “The State of Children’s Health in Wisconsin” essay suggests that Wisconsin is in a powerful position to make significant improvements in the health and well being of our children and families.  The book includes data available on a variety of health, economic, housing, safety and demographic data both by county and for the state as a whole.  View the full book or parts in pdf format.

Working & Poor: "Ready or Not, Here They Come" explores issues related to making high quality early education available to all Wisconsin families.

Working & Poor: "What You Don't Know CAN Hurt You" makes the case for better access to education and job training, and outlines the connection between well-education, skilled parents and healthy kids with bright futures.

Working & Poor: "Making UI Work for Families" presents an indepth look at how Wisconsin's Unemployment Insurance system can be improved to better meet the needs of today's changing workforce, and how these adjustments could contribute to the well-being of children in our state.

2003
2003-2004 WisKids Count Data Book. Wiskids Count is the definitive source of information on the well-being of children in Wisconsin. This year's model focuses on K-12 education, including a district-by-district rundown of per-pupil costs, teacher salaries, special ed. enrollment, and many other indicators of educational well-being. The book also includes an assortment of non-education data by county, such as child abuse and neglect statistics, household income, and juvenile arrests.

"Aiming for Safety: A Survey of Public Opinion on Gun Policy in Wisconsin" ($2 shipping & handling) is based on a survey conducted by the Public Policy Forum, a nonpartisan, nonprofit research organization based in Milwaukee. The survey shows strong public support for handgun regulation and other safety measures. The publication also includes an essay by Dr. William Perloff, chair of the Wisconsin Child Fatality Review Team and the Wisconsin Emergency Medical Services for Children Advisory Board.
